14 years ago, an American animated television series based on the early 1980’s version of the Teen Titans aired on Cartoon Network was created by Glen Murakami. Although it was later on followed by a TV movie (Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo), the series finale ended with a cliffhanger. Thus, leaving a dry taste in every fans mouth.
In honor of the anniversary of Teen Titans, I decided to create a list of some of my favorite episodes from its five-year run. I will be excluding any episode included in the Terra arc as I am a huge Terra stan and I would’ve probably ended up with 1/3rd of the list dedicated to her. We wouldn’t want that.
Without further ado, I present to you my top 14 Teen Titans episodes:
14. Sisters (1x02)

Growing up, I thought Blackfire was the coolest. She was my favorite Teen Titan – until I found out she wasn’t actually a Teen Titan. Before you guys go off on me I’d like to point out the fact that I hadn’t actually re-watched the series until this summer and most of the things I remembered seem to include Blackfire. I easily assumed she made a lot more appearances than she actually did. So, yes, this episode may or may not be on this list because of some weird, sentimental, personal preference.
13. Snowblind (5x05)

AKA Starfire you cinnamon roll who sees the good in everyone and everything. The world does not deserve you. Red Star, as well, was a really interesting character. His decision to isolate himself from the town was quite respectable but not ideal and having Starfire there to give him a wake up call worked. Yes, they have similar abilities and the way it manifests but I think that he wouldn't have listened if it were anybody else. She has a way with words - especially for those that tend to let their mind wander *cough* Robin *cough*. I don't know, man. There's just something about this episode that I really like and I don't know how to explain why.
12. Winner Take All (2x09)

I’m such a sucker for situations wherein the characters are put to the test by competing against one another. Add someone as aesthetically pleasing as Aqualad and I am sold. The only problems I had with this episode was the fact that Robin literally pulls out random communicators out of his pocket and hands them put to everyone… INCLUDING GIZMO, and that there wasn’t a follow-up episode for The Tournament of Heroines. I would’ve loved to see Jinx go against Raven. It would’ve been a great chance to give Blackfire and Starfire the rematch they deserve as well as subtly introduce Rose into the story (You dun fucked up, A-a-ron)
11. Switched (1x07)

Oh! The infamous bodyswitch AU… You would think that getting a chance to see what a bodyswitch would be like with personalities like Raven and Starfire's would be the defining factor that make this episode stand out to me, but it wasn't. Nor was it Starfire unintentionally dissing Raven (although that was hilarious!); rather an aspect of the bodyswitch itself which led to both girls mutually understanding what drives the other's abilities and, by extension, understanding each other as people- err... half-demon and alien.
10. Detention Mad Mod (1x10)

Honestly, a huge part of why I love this episode as much as I do is Mad Mod himself. He's just such an entertaining villain whether it be the whole look he has going on, his words of choice, or just generally how extra he truly is. . Another is the fact that he reminds me of someone from the Beetles. Mad Mod aside, the chase sequence was an iconic throwback to what Cartoon Network used to show during breaks to promote the show. It also presented an accurate representation of how school really is in the eyes of a kid (and maybe a college student too). Beast Boy easily getting tricked by mind control and the only thing that could get him out was stupid stuff is iconic. I just love so much things about this episode, I think it would take forever to list all of them down so I'm just going to leave this as is. #MadMod4President2k17!!
9. Go! (5x10)

If you've watched the episode, it's pretty much already self-explanatory why it just HAD to be on the list. Every hero has a origin story, and this just happened to be the Titans'. I thought it was great how they all came from different backgrounds, yet came to the conclusion that they felt like they needed to band together to help Starfire (whom, if I may add, surprised me with the way she was introduced). Beast Boy, which I will continue to gush about later on in this list, and Raven were the winners of this episode for me. Raven as the team's glue just felt right - especially after her arc.
8. Cyborg the Barbarian (4x02)

NEW SHIP INCOMING! Have I mentioned that my tropes in a ships are usually when the guy first doubts the girls combat skills, but later on learns that she could kill him in his sleep. Leaving him impressed and a little turned on - but nevertheless, starting to respect her? Because it is. It was also pretty interesting seeing Cyborg try to function (no pun intended) in a world that isn't as modernized as he'd like it to be, yet finding a way to make things work. It broke my heart when he left. Can we trade TTG for a spin-off where Cy stays there? Please and thank you.
7. Homecoming (5x01 and 5x02)

Remember when I said I was going to gush about Beast Boy? Well, now's the time! This smol bean needs to be protected from the Doom Patrol. They have their reasons for doing what they do, but BB was a little kid (and he still is mentally but that's not the point). He values the life of his teammates and considers them as family. He doesn't have the heart to sacrifice them for the success of a mission. The difference in the dynamic he has with both them and the Titans is clear and it really gives you a better perspective on his character and the reason why he's so carefree. Because back when he was with the Doom Patrol, he never got the chance to be the kid that he is.
6. Deception (3x01)

I have officially joined the #ProtectCySquad. That one scene with Starfire when they were talking about 'the original version' KILLED ME. I enjoyed his interactions with The HIVE Five - most especially Jinx. It would've been way better if we got more episodes of just Cy going undercover while the rest of the titans go on with their lives without him (they could try). He was clearly getting attached to the idea of being 'Stone'. A glimpse of that didn't feel like it was enough even if the episode took place in a few weeks.
5. Wavelength (3x08)

Bumblebee? More like BumbleBAE, amirite'? She SLADE this episode (Get it? Because HIVE used to work for Slade. Okay...). In all seriousness, this is when I realized that she would be this season's scene STEELer. I'm sorry, I'll stop now. Something about this number makes me feel so punny (*realizes it would be the number of the devil* oh...). Bumblebee as the real spy was well thought of. You'd never expect her because you didn't even know who she really is - unless you've read the comic. The fact that she was THE star student made her knowledgeable to the point where she not only helped Brother Blood build the base/school, but also was trusted by him enough to have access to Cyborgs blueprints.
4. Titans East (3x12 and 3x13)

WE THE STUDENTS OF WESTERBURG HIGH WILL DIE - Oh. Wait! Wrong fandom. You know I've given up hope that someone will actually read this when I start talking trash. But I want to finish this list before I die. The show must go on (unless you're season 6 of Teen Titans)! Well, as you can probably tell by now, I am in love with Titans East. Their clashing personalities only make things better. These gems of episodes also gave us Cyborg's version of the Teen Titans intro. Did you know he can shoot a rocket from his shoe because he's Cyborg? You learn something new everyday! Like I did when I watched these episodes and melted at the thought of Cyborg leading this team. Between the Titans West vs Titans East and the dialogue written during Borther Bloods final match against Cyborg, it was also a pretty SOLID way to end Cyborgs arc.
3. Lightspeed (5x08)

Jinx has always been quite the mystery. She struck me as the type of person who would be better off as a solo act. In fact, she was way out of the HIVE Five's league - Why are the called that though? There were 6 of them before the series finale. Bring Kid Flash into the mix to stir up some trouble whilst nonchalantly persuading Jinx to be her own person like she truly deserves. Which brings me to my favorite scene of this episode: Jinx standing up for herself against Madam Rogue. I hated that bitch. Serves her right for the way she treated Jinx...
2. Hide and Seek (5x07)

Raven babysitting is a concept I never even thought about until this episode. I guess it kinda makes sense after the kind of childhood she had to go though. There were a lot of firsts involved for Raven: Going to Beast Boy for advice on how to handle children, actually taking said advice, being wrong about something, and acting as mother hen. I might as well turn to stone when she said didn't want to leave the kids. Melvin, Teether and Tommy grounded her in some way. And I'm not just saying that because she flies a lot.
1. Titans Together (5x12)

Easily the best episode of Teen Titans. It's not everyday you see all the titans and villains fighting together. Although Slade didn't make an appearance. Personally I think it was because of Jericho's presence in the fight. It probably would've ended like the actual Judas Contract comic did. Speaking of Jericho, props to Teen Titans for actually showing his abilities. I have no idea why people don't show him as much - he's adorable and deadly. What more can you ask for? Poetic justice between Beast Boy and the Brotherhood of Evil? This episode has got that for you too! Having him work with a completely foreign group of teammates was another huge step up for his character development as you realize that he was put in the Doom Patrol for a reason and not just because of his ability. I'd like to see the look on their faces when they found out that it was Beast Boy and his team that defeated the Brotherhood.
And that's my personal list of favorite Teen Titans episodes! It was hard choosing which ones would make it since I wanted a divide between the filler episodes and the normal arcs. I do feel back for not including much on Raven and Robin.. but no going back. What's done is done.
Now to end this with a picture that is the most relatable of the you after reading the post of the favorites:
